Fine Art Lovers Are Going to LOVE 2019’s Biggest Home Décor Trends!

It’s no secret that fine art and home décor have always gone hand in hand. You can see it from ancient Greece to the modernism of the 1950’s. In terms of our modern (or post-modern) home décor and art styles, for several years now, the question on the street has been whether we would see a return to Art Deco (or similarly-themed art, home décor, and fashion) as our own Roaring ‘20s approaches. Well, 2019 is officially here, and I am so excited to tell you about the hugely-changing trends for 2019 and into the 20s, in home décor, and thus in the demand for fine art itself.

We can describe the hottest art and home décor in one word: CONTRAST. Not content with the ‘10s trend of severe minimalist décor in shades of gold, rose gold, and what has been dubbed as “millennial pink,” we as a whole have started gravitating toward the complete opposite: Anything that jumps out and makes a big impact in a loud way! We happen to have lots of art that falls into this category, here at Cascade Art Gallery… in fact, it just so happens that my February showcase is going to be “Massive Canvases”! Massive art is huge right now (pun not intended, but I’ll take it), because in one stroke, it gives a focal point to a room, creates a mood, and covers up a huge amount of wall space—all factors that take home décor and renovation from “okay” to “WOW”! After all, isn’t making an impact what art is all about? A case in point regarding the “contrast” theme of 2019 are the two “colors of the year.” Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year is called “Living Coral,” a bright, energetic papradascha tone. Conversely, PPG Paint’s 2019 Color of the Year is “Night Watch,” a deep, dramatic, and moody green that evokes images of an ancient forest and can be seen in many traditional Scottish tartans, including the one by the exact same name. This is in step with the two main schools of “contrast” we will be seeing this year: warm whites with splashes of brights and jewel tones, and moody dark colors making a perfect match with gunmetal and matte black. You can see the warm whites with splashes of brights in the large Betts Casey canvas that I have used as the poster child of our February display. If the deep, moody theme is more to your liking, try out something unique like the untitled etching by Ann Winsom or “A Pepper I” by Takahora, both of which we currently house. Limited edition and one-of-a-kind fine art and artisanal pieces—and even antiques and heirlooms—are suddenly trendy again, so when you take one of these pieces of fine art home, you can rest assured that it will pay its dues.

One more big switch that we’re going to see in the art and décor world in 2019 is a continued mix of Scandinavian and Art Deco influences. This juxtaposition will create a gentle lean toward maximalism, but thankfully not so much that we will end up as hoarders! Instead of filling your home with knick-knacks to create this atmosphere, think mixed and matched textures and colors in unexpected ways. In terms of fine art, expect to see a surge of mixed-material fine art, as well as higher-end tapestries. If you’re really trendy, you can mix and match a tapestry or mixed-material piece with a line drawing, all in the same room! If this aesthetic speaks to you but you need one or all of these items, trust me when I say that we can provide all of the above. Maybe we can make this March’s showcase?

I’m looking forward to entering 2019 and exploring all of these big changes with you throughout the year! Is there a trend here that you are looking forward to—or can’t stand—more than the others? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
